What In The World Is Oil Pulling?

Okay, so I recently heard about a new beauty trend called "Oil Pulling", and after giving it a go, I felt like I had to share it with you! So, I am sure you are curious as to what oil pulling is. In short, you take unrefined organic Coconut Oil and you swish it around in your mouth for 20 minutes. I know what you are thinking: (1) Why on earth would I do that? (2) Why for 20 minutes, and how? I would like to share my experience with you and give you a little insight as to why I love the whole process. I do not sell coconut oil, nor am I endorsing any specific brand :) I simply want to share this fascinating and effective beauty/health regimen with you!

Oil Pulling

As a wife, mother, and business owner, you can imagine that my mornings are filled with routine tasks to make sure everything is in order! The first day I decided to try oil pulling, I was nervous about two things: how I would react to the texture/taste of the oil, and how I would be able to keep swishing it around for 20 whole minutes. But alas, through my routine the time passed fast and I completed day 1. My teeth felt smooth and strong, and I decided there was no harm in trying it out for a weeks time. By the end of week 1 I was hooked!

So, I am sure you are wondering about the benefits of oil pulling. Below is a complete list. I will let you know what I have experienced following the list:

  • Whitens teeth
  • Strengthens teeth
  • Strengthens gums & jaw
  • Prevents gum disease, cavities, and gingivitis
  • Prevents bad breath
  • Helps to reduce bleeding in the gums
  • Prevents dry lips, mouth, and throat
  • Possible treatment for TMJ and soreness in the jaw area.

Alleged health benefits outside of oral health have been reported as:

  • Migraine & headache relief
  • Reduced redness and swelling in bones and joints
  • May help with gastroenteritis
  • Helps with eczema
  • Reduce congestion
  • Promote healthy sleep patterns
  • Reduce hangover
  • Overall body detoxification
  • & More

So, are you eager to know what benefits I did/did not experience? The two most prominent experiences were whiter teeth and an overall healthier-feeling mouth. I can say that my headaches have been decreased, but this could be completely unrelated to the oil pulling method . Many people completely replace brushing with the OP method, but alas, I still continue to brush as per usual. My teeth have never looked or felt better. My breath smells fabulous . Yes, even in the mornings. And of course, the oil has helped to moisturize my lips, which is a nice perk.

Would I recommend the OP method? Of course! The time flies by, and it makes my teeth whiter and healthier. Who wouldn't like that? Especially for a fraction of the cost of a dental visit.

Which Oil Works Best? I have tried both sesame and coconut oil for this method, and prefer the taste of the coconut oil. However, I have read on different sites that switching up your oils is beneficial to the process.

Do you have any experience with oil pulling? I would love to hear about it in the comments below!
