A daily moisturizer is an essential component of a good skinroutine for those with dry skin. Moisturizers can keep your skin hydrated and younger looking by reducing dry, flaky skin and lessoning the appearance of fine lines. Moisturizers are needed for dry skin to maintain the skin’s suppleness and minimize elemental damage. People with combination or oily skin may not need moisturizers as often. No matter which type of skin you have, though, there are some basic qualities you should look for in a moisturizer. A good moisturizer should have one of the three groups of moisturizing ingredients: 1) Occlusives, 2) Humectants, or 3) Emollients. You should also consider moisturizers that contain antioxidants, which help protect against cell damage, and sunblock or sunscreen ingredients, which can protect skin from photoaging and skin cancer. In general, dry skin types will benefit from moisturizers with a thicker consistency, like a cream; and combination to oily skin will benefit from a more fluid moisturizer, such as a lotion.

Occlusives: These ingredients protect the outer layer of the skin by forming a barrier and prevent moisture loss from sun or wind exposure. Examples of occlusives are: lanolin, petrolatum, dimethicone and paraffin.
Humectants: Humectants help the skin layers absorb water, causing the skin’s surface to swell up slightly. This makes the skin look smoother and less wrinkled for a period of time. Ingredients classified as humectants are: alpha hydroxy acids, sorbitol, glycerin, urea and sugars.
Emollients: Emollients make the skin appear smoother by filling in the tiny areas of roughness or flakiness. Certain occlusives have emollient properties. These include: mineral oil, petrolatum and lanolin.

The ingredients in moisturizers, as with most products, are listed in order of quantity. When looking at a moisturizer, pay attention to how high up on the list a desired ingredient is. If it’s at the bottom, there is only a trace amount of that ingredient in the product. Skin Care by Alana has some of the best moisturizers available for every skin type.
