You’re Only as Old as You Look

My favorite part of a wedding is the dance party! This past weekend I eagerly hit the floor at my cousin’s reception only to find I didn’t recognize any of the music. Confused, I asked my hubby what was up with the DJ- to which he politely reminded me that we are….old…. WHAT?! We can’t be! Determined to prove him wrong, I dug up 10 anti-aging rules that will keep me (and you) looking young and fresh no matter what song is on!

Wear sunscreen daily. Choose one with UVA and UVB protection. Save a step in the morning with a daily moisturizer that already contains SPF. IMAGE Skincare makes a great one. They even have a tinted moisturizer so you can knockout moisturizer, sunscreen, and foundation all in one step! Who doesn’t love that?

No smoking. Beyond causing cancer and bad breath, smoking also destroys collagen and elastin, and reduces estrogen levels in the body. These three work together to keep the skin firm! If you want to look your best, it’s time to quit!

Retinoids work wonders. Retinoids minimize the appearance of age spots and fine lines. They also prevent new ones from occurring!

Drink water. Most of us spend quite a bit of time and money hydrating our skin from the outside. Hydrating from the inside is just as important! Drinking water not only improves the overall health of your skin but it can even reduce the appearance of wrinkles!

Catch some Zzz’s. Beauty sleep is real! Sleep is necessary for skin to repair itself and reduce puffiness around the eyes. When you get enough sleep, your wrinkles are less obvious. (Along with the dark circles and crankiness we’d all prefer to go without)

Leave blemishes alone. Resist the urge to pick! As we age our skin takes longer to heal. Use a cleanser with benzyl peroxide to kill bacteria if you struggle with breakouts.

Keep a steady weight. If you need extra motivation to stick with the gym and skip the pie, remember the excess weight and yo-yo dieting age you! When weight fluctuates, elasticity decreases and our skin doesn’t quite snap back like it used to.

Eat a balanced diet. The nutrients in food feed your skin. A balanced diet will help you look your youngest. Avoid alcohol intake (darn) and foods with refined sugars. Add nuts, fatty fish, and dark green vegetables, to your diet for extra skin boosters.

Take it easy. Chronic stress literally causes your body’s cells to age quicker. Clearly you are busy (or you wouldn’t be stressed) but it’s to your benefit that you find ways to relax and unwind.

Exercise. Physical activity increases blood flow to the skin resulting in the youthful glow we all want! Aim for 30 minutes 4-5 times a week.

There is such a thing as getting better with age but that doesn’t mean you can’t go kicking and screaming. Thankfully, these tips will keep you looking and feeling young to the very end!
