How to Winterize Your Skin Care

On a recent trip to my parents’ home in Northern California, my sisters and I discussed our dry skin and how to combat the redness, eczema, and psoriasis that come along with it!

We sat with a beautiful view of the Sacramento River, enjoying the warm fireplace while it rained outside.

This conversation combined with the beautiful colder weather inspired me to write this particular post!

After an extremely hot and seemingly never-ending summer, the winter season has finally arrived!

The cold is a welcomed change.

We here in California love to get bundled up in cute sweaters, boots, hats, coats, just as much as the colder states.

And who could forget about the gorgeous and seasonal dark lipstick trend?

Indeed, this weather is wonderful for getting cozy by the fire, enjoying the heater on, drinking more than our fair share of coffee, and playing in the cold, but it isn’t the best for our skin.

You may be familiar with these skin problems during the winter months, but you don’t have to live with it.

Here are some of my favorite tips for keeping my skin gorgeous, glowing, and comfortable in the coldest of conditions!

Balance

Moderate the amount of time you stay outside.

The drastic change in temperature from inside-to-outside (and vice versa) causes redness to the skin, as well as chapped lips.

Also, try keeping extreme heat from hitting your body directly; the heat dries out your skin.

This applies to showers, heaters, fireplaces, and more!

Slather It On

Even if you aren’t a lotion fan, I highly recommend adopting a body moisturizing into your regimen, and a rich moisturizer at that!

This is crucial for preventing dry, scaly, and itchy skin.

And trust me, it is much easier to prevent than to reverse (ouch!).

Exfoliate

Just because you’re not showing as much skin as you do in the summer does not mean you can ditch your exfoliator.

This crucial beauty product helps to prevent ingrown hairs that can come from being cold after shaving or waxing, and also allow your skin to better absorb your moisturizer!

Depending on where you live, you might want to upgrade your skincare products to withstand the winter chill.

While many of your products can transition between seasons, there are quite a few that might not!

Foundation

You may love to rock a lightweight, bronze-toned mineral powder in the summer, but that does not mean you should rock it year-round.

I typically recommend a lightweight liquid foundation to help hydrate the skin and have found that my skin tone is usually 1-2 shades lighter than my summer shade (since I am not spending as much time in the sun).

My favorite winter foundation is La Bella Donna’s Ultimate Pure Perfection.

This product is a creamy liquid foundation that nourishes the skin and gives it a flawless complexion, making it a perfect fit for harsher winter conditions!

Moisturizer

Light moisturizers are great year-round, but when winter hits and your skin starts to feel dry, you may need to upgrade to a rich moisturizer or even facial oil!

These help lock in moisture more effectively than a lightweight moisturizer.

My favorite winter moisturizer is Rhonda Allison’s Ultra Hydration Face Cream.

This product provides rich moisture to optimize the hydration levels in the skin and is great for day and evening use!

Body Lotion

Much like facial moisturizer, you may need a richer moisturizer or even a body oil to absorb deeper than a moisturizer typically would.

During winter I like to upgrade my body lotion to a body oil to help combat my dry skin.

My favorite winter body oil is Eminence Organics Apricot Body Oil.

This product is very soothing, moisturizing, and takes years off your complexion.

I find it’s the perfect oil to apply after your shower, or even add a few drops in your bath to soak in.

It’s lightweight oil, so it will absorb quickly! No uncomfortable, greasy feel.

Lip Products

Using a hydrating lip balm will help us avoid getting dreaded chapped lips this winter season.

I keep my Dermalogica Renewal Lip Complex in my handbag at all times for easy reapplication throughout the day!

This lip balm is amazing, as it soothes, treats and hydrates my lips while preventing environmental damage.

Of course, slathering on the lip balm has other benefits: like making your lips look perfect and plush in your favorite fall/winter shades!

I am currently hooked on Glo Skin Beauty Lipstick in It Girl!

It is the perfect deep purple for an on-trend, standout pout.

Final Thoughts

Upgrading and adding a few essential products in your winter skin care regimen will greatly improve your skin and eliminate the common skin care problems that occur during the winter months!
