Organic Beauty Care: Is It Worth It?

With Earth Month in full swing, I have been getting many inquiries on organic skincare, and whether or not it is "worth it". There are, in fact, many benefits to choosing organic skincare, but it is important to keep certain things in mind when making the decision to go organic. For instance: not everything labeled "Organic" is going to be an amazingly amazing miracle solution. Yes, many organic products are highly effective - but some are not. I always recommend doing the research for brands that have proven results and a good reputation, such as 100% Pure, Eminence Organics, iLike Organics, and much more. So, I am sure you are interested to hear about the benefits of choosing organics! Shall we?

Is It Worth It?

Less Harsh Chemicals - One of my favorite things about organic products is the fact that they are generally free of the harsh chemicals found in drugstore brands. By harsh chemicals, I mean preservatives, artificial fragrances, parabens, and more. That being said, you must be sure to read the ingredients list! Some products boast an "organic" formulation while only offering some organic ingredients.

Just As Effective - A common misconception about organic products is that they do not deliver the same results as the "good stuff" . This is sometimes true, which is why I recommend doing your research and gravitating towards product lines with good reputations. Some of the best organic product lines are just as effective, if not more-so, than your favorite drugstore brands. Also, the harsh chemicals found in drugstore brands are often doing more harm to your skin than good in the long-term!

Low Risk For Sensitive Skin - If you have sensitive skin , you probably understand the struggle of finding a product that doesn't irritate your skin. Going back to my first point, certified organic products are often free of the chemicals, dyes, parabens, fragrances, and irritants found in common-name brands. There is no "one-size-fits-all" when it comes to skin are. Just because millions can tolerate the harsher stuff does not mean you should. Also, remember: the purer the product, the fewer the ingredients, the smaller the chances of having a negative reaction! Always a definite plus.

Are There Downsides?

Naturally, you may be hesitant to make the jump. The biggest concern when it comes to organic skincare is this: many companies label their products as "natural" or "made with organic ingredients". These products are not necessarily organic, which means they may be loaded with the same harsh chemicals you are trying to avoid. A product must have at least 95% organic ingredients to be labelled as "organic", so as I mentioned before: always read ingredients!

Another important factor when deciding to switch is that organic products tend to have a shorter shelf life than non-organic brands. This is because they utilize natural preservatives. Most organic products can be stored for 1-2 years unopened, or 6-12 months once opened. For this reason I usually suggest trying a smaller size of a new organic product first, and gauging how much you use over a period of time.

Should You Try Organic?

In the end, the choice of "switching vs. not switching" is totally up to you! I am a huge fan of organic skincare products, and always will be!
