Ageless Beauty: Is Your Skin Looking Older or Tighter?

Alana Mitchell, Licensed Esthetician, Day Spa Owner

OK, I could beat around the bush and call your skin something like “mature” or “refined,” but instead I’ll do you the honor of speaking plainly - you're reading this because you're worried your skin is looking older.

If spots, lines, and crow’s feet have been showing up in your photos and mirror, it may be time to change up your makeup.

To make sure you know you're not reading advice from some random person, read a bit more about me and my experience!

As We Age…

The outer layer of the skin loses lipids, making the skin thinner, drier, and slower to recover from blemishes and damage.

The inner layer loses elasticity and collagen and as the supportive fat thins, the skin sags. (Bet you thought you’d never be sad about fat thinning!)

Pores, follicles and oil glands become prominent and the skin becomes more sensitive to the sun.

Now that the Band-Aid’s been ripped off…

What You Can Do About It

Diet, smoking, genetics, and sun exposure all play a part in the shape of your skin, so take care of yourself!

All experts agree the best thing for older skin is to MOISTURIZE!

And, make sure to get enough sleep and always wear sunscreen.

Excellent moisturizers for all skin types are the Image Skincare Vital C Hydrating Repair Creme and the Epicuren Colostrum Luminous Glow Cream.

Makeup Tips

The goal of makeup is NOT to make you look younger.

The goal of makeup at every age is to accentuate the beauty that's already there.

As we age, what we want to highlight may change over the years.

For older women, makeup can add color to faded skin and cover small blemishes and wrinkles, resulting in a radiant look.

Remember, women with older skin are no less attractive than younger women!

Beauty is beauty at every age!

For mature skin, I only use La Bella Donna mineral makeup on my clients, because the pure ingredients help lock in moisture.

Pre-Foundation Primer

Let me introduce you to your new best friend: primer.

This base bonds makeup to skin, smooths dry and rough patches, and shrinks pores. Sounds great, right?

Use it after you moisturize and before you apply foundation.

Eye primers help eyeshadow stay smooth and in place all day.

Lip primers fill in wrinkles around the mouth and soften cracked lips.

I love the Glo Minerals line of pure makeup primers for the face and eyes!

See them here.

Filler

Fillers can fill in deep wrinkles and expression lines for a couple of hours.

Double bonus - most eye fillers reduce swelling and brighten the area under your eyes!

Check out Clayton Shagal's line of pure collagen and elastin topical fillers for the entire face, they're AMAZING for aging skin!

Concealer

You probably already wear a concealer that matches your complexion to cover up dark spots and imperfections.

What you may not know is that colored concealers can do a better job with less product when worn correctly and under foundation.

Purple concealers neutralize yellow spots, green covers red spots and broken blood vessels, and orange concealers hide dark spots.

Youngblood makes some excellent colored concealers that I use.

Foundation

Resist the urge to apply more makeup in order hide signs of aging!

Older women should actually wear less makeup than younger women because it tends to sit on top of the skin, creating a cakey look and feel.

As you age, avoid using heavy formulas because they make wrinkles and lines stand out.

Choose a product rich in moisture and always apply foundation after your moisturizer has had time to absorb.

Use a liquid formula and stay away from powders.

If you feel naked without a powder, use a translucent one and lightly dust it on your forehead and nose.

Powder on your whole face will make you look dry and matted.

Again, I love La Bella Donna's foundations for this reason.

Alana's Top 4 Anti-Aging Product Picks

My day spa retails over 100 of the most popular skincare product lines on the market.

This has allowed me to test countless anti-aging products on myself and clients over the years.

If you know me, then you know that I'm sick of all of the fake blogs online, fake articles (that are secretly posted by companies trying to sell products), and even dishonest TV commercials that lie to consumers about “miracle” anti-aging products and ingredients (half of these ingredients are made up).

I've created a special shopping page on my website designed to help you purchase anti-aging products easily.

Be sure to watch the video, where I explain some of my favorite anti-aging products.

Here is some brief info about each of these selections (and the companies that make them).

My goal is to get you on a long-term skincare regime that will absolutely work!

Image Skincare Ageless Total Repair Cream: Image Skincare is a company that should be on every skincare fan’s shelf. Simply stated, they use expensive ingredients like retinol without the expensive price tag, and all Image Skincare products are paraben-free. I love the effect this product has on my clients' wrinkles, undereye area, and skin texture when they consistently use it as their night cream.

Epicuren Discovery Alpha Lipoic Omega Cream: Few companies have patented and proprietary ingredients, meaning you truly can't find the ingredients in other products. Epicuren uses proprietary ingredients in most of their products, including the Alpha Lipoic Omega Cream, and all Epicuren products are all natural. When used in place of your normal moisturizer, this product will tone and smooth your skin, minimize your pore size, reduce wrinkles, and make you naturally glow.

Rhonda Allison Exotica Rhodiola Cream: Try it for only $25! Rhonda Allison is another company that uses proprietary and all-natural ingredients. Rhonda is a total sweetheart! Replace your normal moisturizer with an exotic anti-aging treatment that acts as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, skin strengthener, hydrator, humectant, and wrinkle reducer.

Ilike Organic Glycolic Medlar Rejuvenating Treatment: This product is completely certified organic, all-natural, and paraben-free. This one goes out to all of you organic fans out there! It diminishes wrinkles while gently exfoliating your skin by loosening the cells that tightly cling together. It also increases the formation of new keratin while hydrating the skin with vitamins. Check it out!
