6 Products That Will Turn Back the Clock & Get You Summer-Ready

It’s never too early or too late to start the perfect anti-aging skincare routine, and what better time to look great than summer?

blog_20170724_1new

There’s just something about summertime that makes us want to feel good and look good.

We want to get outside and soak up the sun and the warm weather and be an active participant in the best season of the year.

If only we all had access to the fountain of youth so we could shamelessly enjoy the sunshine and never pay the price in crow’s feet!

The American Academy of Dermatology says how wrinkled our skin becomes depends on a variety of factors, including skin type, genetics, and history of unprotected sun exposure.

According to the National Center for Biotechnology (NCBI), healthy skin provides a barrier that protects against dehydration and penetration of various microorganisms that affect the aging process (irritants, allergens, radiation, etc.).

Daily skincare can increase skin regeneration, elasticity, and smoothness, and results in temporarily changing the skin's condition to give you better odds in the fighting the aging battle.

Fighting the aging battle isn’t anything new; we all want to look as young as we feel on the inside.

And, as technology evolves, so does the beauty market.

We have access to some the latest and greatest in anti-aging products and treatments.

Our genetics are typically the deciding factor in how our skin changes and ages through the years, but we can influence the aging of our skin as well. The American Academy of Dermatology refers to these different types of aging as “intrinsic” versus “extrinsic.”

Intrinsic Aging:

  • Natural aging process
  • Visible lines, loss of facial fullness
  • Skin becomes thinner and dryer
  • Genetics largely influences this type of aging

Extrinsic Aging:

  • Environmental aging factors
  • Influenced by lifestyle choices (smoking, irregular sunscreen usage, etc.)
  • Preventative actions can slow effects of aging

By making simple lifestyle changes and finding the proper products for our skin type and concern, we can definitely slow down the effects of aging on our skin.

Hot Summer Skincare Tips

1. Cleanse

When it comes to cleansing your skin, the primary objective is to rid your skin of excess oils and pore-clogging debris without over-drying.

Steer clear of harsh cleansers that can dry or irritate your skin.

Always chose a product with gentle, non-irritating ingredients that cleanse and nourish your skin, while also providing a dose of anti-aging benefits as well.

One cleanser I especially love is Rhonda Allison Foaming Peptide Cleanser.

It gently removes impurities, infuses your skin with nourishing vitamins and probiotics, and is safe and gentle enough for the most sensitive skin.

And it's the perfect summer cleanser for all skin types!

But don't save it just for summer.

This is a cleanser you can use year-round!

2. Moisturize

Keeping your skin hydrated during the summer is crucial.

But now's the time to switch to a lighter-weight moisturizer than you've been using during fall or winter.

Choose one that leaves your skin feeling cool and fresh.

And if it also contains a potent SPF component, so much the better!

One moisturizer I highly recommend for anti-aging and hydration that's perfect during the summer is Image Skincare Prevention+ Daily Ultimate Protection Moisturizer SPF 50.

This product provides high-level broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection as it moisturizes.

It won't wash off in water or when you sweat, making it perfect for outdoor sports and even swimming.

And being free of fillers and parabens, it's an excellent choice for even the most sensitive skin.

Bonus: This formula is packed with antioxidants and plant stem cells, meaning you get environmental protection and anti-aging in addition to the above!

3. Exfoliate

During the summer, gentle exfoliation is a must for clearing away impurities.

Even though you've switched to lighter-weight products, your skin will still tend to be a bit oilier than usual when the weather is warm.

Exfoliation will leave your skin fresh and radiant as it sweeps your pores of impurities.

But do be careful not to overdo it when it comes to exfoliating your skin.

Some women only need to exfoliate once or twice a week, while others may be able to do so more often.

Your esthetician is your best resource for guidance on how often you should exfoliate to keep your skin looking its beautiful best.

And as always, be sure to follow the directions on your product – there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

4. Nourish and Protect

No matter the season, as your skin ages, extra nourishment, and protection from the environment is a must.

And let's face it, it's never too late to provide your skin with extra loving care to slow down signs of aging.

Look for serums and treatments loaded with peptides, vitamins, and antioxidants.

If they feel too heavy during the day, use them only at night during the warm summer months.

And of course, you always want to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun.

Applying a nourishing moisturizer with added SPF protection to hydrate and protect your skin should be on your daily to-do list all year-round.

And be sure to keep your beach bag stocked with quality sunscreens all summer long as your best defense against aging.

Speaking of quality sunscreens, I'm SO excited to announce my NEW Daily Matt Physical Defense SPF 47!

Made with 10% zinc oxide and 5.5% titanium dioxide, it protects your skin while you enjoy the outdoors and is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes!

It also won't leave that annoying white cast on your skin as some other formulas do. :)

5. Hydrate From the Inside Out

During the summer months, your skin and your body crave even more hydration than usual.

Keep a bottle of fresh filtered water handy to sip from (and refill) throughout the day.

Water cleanses your system, plumps up your skin cells, and helps keep your skin moist, dewy, and fresh.

Bonus: Staying hydrated can aid in weight management and keep you feeling alert and refreshed all day long. A huge plus for busy ladies and mama bears alike!

6. Wear Sunglasses

Your eyes and the skin around them need protection from the sun. Not only can sun exposure lead to cataracts later in life, but all that squinting can cause crow’s feet around your eyes to form. Ugh!

Protect your eye area with a good pair of UV protective sunglasses.

And don't forget to apply a healthy dollop of eye cream, preferably with added SPF protection, every day!

Hint: if you’ve been looking for that perfect sign to tell you to go ahead and purchase those cute sunnies you’ve been eyeing, consider this your sign. ;)

7. Drink Your Antioxidants

Relax with a glass of green tea over ice for a refreshing thirst quencher loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Green tea is practically a magic elixir as it contains epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which works to protect your skin from the sun's damage from the inside out.

EGCG does come in supplement form, but it's essential to consult any potential new supplements with your doctor before taking them!

A cold glass of green tea is a great and refreshing way to recharge on a busy summer day!

8. Smile and Laugh

Just for giggles and laughs, I had to throw this one in here.

After all, not all anti-aging regimens go on your skin.

When you feel good, you just naturally look your best.

A smile instantly melts years off of your face.

It just might be the most powerful anti-aging treatment in your skincare beauty bag! :)
