“My top skin care brands are brands that contain the best quality and highest percentages of active ingredients like 10% glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid and peptides. A Brand like Filorga is always at the top of my list.

A few of My favourites include:

Cleansers/makeup removers: BIOTHERM Balm-to-Oil Deep Cleanser and makeup remover and Philosophy Purity Cleanser

Eye creams: Vasanti Cosmetics Eye Wonder and Filorga Optim-Eyes

Serums: Olay Regenerist Luminous Facial Oil and Clarins Double Serum

Face creams: BIOTHERM Everplump and Filorga Nutrifiller.”

Eau Thermale Avène is one of my favorite skincare brands. As a dermatologist I make both safety and efficacy priorities when making skincare recommendations, especially for my patients who have sensitive skin.

The Avène products are formulated with pure thermal spring water sourced in Avène, France, which is excellent for soothing itching, redness and other sensitivities.

When doing procedures in my office I often spray the skin with the Avène Thermal Spring Water before and after the treatment to minimize any chance of irritation.

The brand’s PhysioLift NIGHT Smoothing, Regenerating Night Balm and PhysioLift EYES, an excellent eye cream, also contain Retinaldehyde, a non-irritating form of Vitamin A, which offers the anti-aging benefits of retinols such as improved cell turnover and stimulation of collagen without irritation.

It is combined with an ingredient derived from moisturizing agents found in brown algae to boost collagen production and hyaluronic acid fragmented to precise molecular weights to help replump the skin.

I’m also a fan of the Avène Tolérance Extrême Mask. The plant-based glycerin is one of the most effective humectants that is naturally recognized by the aquaporins, which are the skin’s water delivery channels that deliver water molecules into the skin cells.

DefenAge is a new skin care line using synthetic peptides derived from stem cell technology to help trigger the renewal of keratinocytes (skin cells), which generate a renewed epidermis.

These synthetic peptides take the place of defensins, which are naturally-occurring antimicrobial peptides that enhance the basal cell layer of the epidermis, and which decrease with age. One product I like is their 8-in-1 BioSerum.

EltaMD makes excellent sun protection products that are among my favorites. The brand offers a selection of broad-spectrum formulas with high levels of SPF from 30 to 50. And the formulas are targeted for just about every skin type.

For example, one formula I like is EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46, which is for skin that’s prone to acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation.

For broad-spectrum protection the brand selects transparent zinc oxide, a non-irritating physical sunscreen ingredient, which scatters harmful UV rays away from the skin. Because the brand’s zinc oxide is dimethicone-coated it has an elegant feel and is well tolerated by all skin colors—even dark skin tones—without leaving a bluish cast.

Glytone offers skincare products formulated with free acid value glycolic acid, which offers optimum bioavailability of glycolic acid to the skin for more efficient exfoliation, compared to some other skincare products with glycolic acid that is buffered.

This allows for very effective penetration of glycolic acid for excellent exfoliating benefits, which helps in smoothing and retexturizing the skin. For a quick, at-home glycolic peel, I like the Glytone Rejuvenating Mini Peel Gel, which is also helpful in between professional peels to maintain results.

I also like the Glytone Age-Defying line of antioxidant products (a serum, day cream, night cream and eye cream), which includes Red Tea Flavonoids, a very powerful antioxidant that is more effective than green tea, in the formulas.

PCA Skin products are free of synthetic dyes and fragrances, mineral oil, petrolatum, lanolin and phthalates, all ingredients that might potentially trigger irritation such as redness and rashes in sensitive or allergic individuals.

Their patented unique delivery systems delivering retinol deep into the dermis without irritation is excellent. The PCA Skin C & E Strength Max contains 20% Vitamin C and 5% Vitamin E in an Anhydrous (water-free) form. Anhydrous is a water-free system which makes for the most stable form of Vitamin C as well as a super-silky feel.

Skinbetter Science offers products with a special “smart” technology that delivers ingredients exactly where they are needed. Their products with retinoids also feature a proprietary technology that offers the optimum anti-aging benefits of retinoids without irritating the skin.

One of my top picks is their Regenerating AlpaRet Overnight Cream FACE which not only has a retinoid but also glycolic acid for better penetration of the retinoid, as well as peptides to help smooth and firm the skin and antioxidants.

SkinMedica is a favorite of mine because it offers a very effective line of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) products with various forms of HA throughout the line.

For example, HA5 Rejuvenating Factor has a blend of five forms of Hyaluronic Acid that work synergistically to not only leave skin smoother instantly but also provide continuous hydration.”

Claudio Huttik – website // twitter

Claudio Huttik~ Skincare Expert Board of Directors SPPSCS Beauty Advisor for NewBeauty Magazine

“I often like to cherry pick products from brands. After having working in the medical field for so many years I go for brands that are actually active and deliver results.

For Physicians only dispensed products I go for Obagi Medical Products because hydroquinone is a powerful ingredient and does work wonders for the all skin types, if administered correctly.

Shiseido has amazing cream cleansers. They are really rich like a cream which become a lotion like cleanser once applied. Perfect to assist in hydrating the skin in these colder months, and leaves skin nice and pampered ready for the next steps.

Amore Pacific also has similar product. Their hydrating masks for face and one for the eyes is really good. Its a sheet mask that has built in serums. Once you remove the masks skin stays hydrated and leaves on a nice serum to be rubbed on to the skin and maintain skin health and super intense hydration.

Glam Glow has amazing masks. Thats what they are known for and medical brands don’t have masks so thats a great add on. I love the glam glow mud mask to treat pores and their hydrating mask is also amazing and can be used as an overnight treatment.

My favorite Vitamin-C is Dr. Dennis Gross. The combination of Vitamin-C L-ascorbic Acid 15% and Ferulic Acid is a beauty. Brightens, correcting and preventing any further free radical damage. He also has both the eye cream and moisturizer with Ferulic and retinol. Making the 3 a powerful treatment.

Dr. Murad has an AMAZING SPF. Invisiblur Perfecting Shield – Broad Spectrum SPF 30. But feels exactly like a primer, and as the name says its invisible and leaves no residue or anything. Anyone can use this. From the most pale to the darkest of the skin without a problem.”

“My favorite brand is my own product line, Plush Skin. It contains simple ingredients that are good for the skin, hair, soul, and environment.

Each product is specifically and consciously chosen to moisturize, hydrate, repair, rejuvenate, and infuse nutrients into the hair and skin.

My other favorite brand is the Whole Foods 360 body care collection. They have a slew of lotions, hand creams, etc that are quite lovely and supple on the skin. I also love Trader Joe’s hand cream in the silver tin tube.

My kids and mother love it too! It has a smooth silky feel upon application that lasts for hours!”

Giorgia Guazzarotti – website // twitter

Giorgia Guazzarotti~ Skincare addict. Beauty science nerd. Helping you achieve flawless skin. Serving up your daily dose of smart beauty.

Paula’s Choice is my absolute favorite skincare brand. What makes it different is its scientific approach to skincare.

It doesn’t matter how popular an ingredient is, if there aren’t scientific studies backing up its effectiveness, it doesn’t make the cut. She also steers well clear of fragrance and anything else that could cause irritations. Whenever I use her products, I know my skin is in good hands!

I am also a fan of Drunk Elephant. They only make a handful of products at the moment but they only use the best, proven-to-work anti-aging ingredients, such as glycolic acid and vitamin C. They are more expensive but they do what they say on the tin, so I feel like they’re worth the splurge.

A new favorite is Deciem and all its sub-brands, including The Ordinary and Hylamide. They’re using innovative new technologies and breakthrough ingredients, such as new forms of retinoids for anti-aging and sugar esters to cleanse skin, yet they’ve managed to keep the prices very affordable.

I’m really enjoying exploring this line. Everything I’ve tried so far has become a staple in my skincare routine!”

Julia Carroll – website // twitter

Julia Carroll~ Toronto’s top cosmetic dermatologist with skin tips, the latest derm news and patient-inspired tweets.

“One of the star brands in my office is Neocutis.  This swiss line uses PSP, a powerful peptide, to command results. This innovative line marries elegance in product texture with scientific innovation.

Lumiere eye cream is Neocutis’s star product.  It improves fine lines and texture in the eye area without irritating this delicate area. We can’t keep this in our dispensary.

A new line on my radar is AlumeriMD, an uber exclusive medical skin care brand focused on clean science. For those who like a natural approach these products integrate powerful active ingredients with scientifically proven natural ingredients.

Calm-R is a hydrating serum that targets redness and and blemished skin seen in both my rosacea and acne patients.  It contains  Hinokitiol and Sea Whip as well as Marine Glycosaminoglycans.

This combination of natural antioxidant and anti-irritant ingredients is a must have for my sensitive skin patients.”

Kelly Cook – website // twitter

Kelly Cook~ Kelly Cook- Co-Founder, Snob Global Media. Fashion, Beauty, Food, Lifestyle. Essentials for the snob life.

“I have so many beauty products that I love. I have a floor to ceiling cabinet it my bathroom to house all of my beauty obsessions! But my favorite line that I keep going back to is Avene eau Thermale, it is the one brand that addresses my biggest beauty concerns – hydration, sun protection and anti-age. And they have my all time favorite products for summer and winter care.

I have freckles, the once cute distinction as a child is now a marred sign of age. I tan in 15 minutes, which once was my bragging right but now it’s my kryptonite.

To keep these freckles/sun spots at bay, I have to be a tyrant about sunscreen. The absolute best sunscreen is the Avene Ultra Light 50 (http://www.aveneusa.com/best-sellers/ultra-light-hydrating-sunscreen-lotion-spf-50) which is super lightweight, followed up by the Avene Tinted Compact (http://www.aveneusa.com/skin-care/sun-care/high-protection-tinted-compact-beige) which gives full coverage while looking incredibly natural. I will sometimes use this at night because it gives such a flawless complexion.

Everyone loves the Avene Thermal Spring water spray (http://www.aveneusa.com/best-sellers/thermal-spring-water) but none more than I. You will rarely find me without it in my bag. I bring the small TSA approved can on the plane and my seat partner (usually my kids or husband) also benefit from my hourly dousing of hydration.

In the summer, what’s better than a cool spray to the face that also keeps the skin plump full of healing minerals? For cold winter nights when the heater is on full blast creating a bone dry environment, the best thing to do is spray the Thermal Spring Water on before all of the oil based products like your serums, moisturizers and oils to seal in maximum moisture.

This is a trick that will actually turn back time.

Speaking of bone dry, for the winter I cannot live without the Avene Lipid Replenishing cream (http://www.aveneusa.com/best-sellers/xeracalm-lipid-replenishing-cream) for the entire body. No more itchy scaly winter skin. And what about those hands?

Save the crocodile skin for your bags, to keep your hands as fresh as a daisy even after frequent hand washing, use the Cold Cream Hand Cream (http://www.aveneusa.com/cold-cream-hand-cream) twice a day, it is nothing short of miraculous.”

“I love SKINSHIFT because it is personalized skincare that begins with a DNA test that analyzes single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs, related to your skin’s genetic potential in five categories of skin health.

These include collagen, sun protection, antioxidant protection, sensitivity, and glycation.  The skincare products combine the latest breakthroughs in skin care technology with natural ingredients like phytochemicals, antioxidants, and peptides.

All SKINSHIFT® products are free from added fragrance, color, mineral oil, parabens, or other ingredients that may be harmful or irritating to the skin.

Another favorite in our clinic is Skin Medica’s TNS Recovery Complex.  It’s an all-in-one treatment for fine lines, wrinkles as well as skin tone and texture that contains over 380 growth factors and cytokines as well as antioxidants.

It was originally developed for wound healing and we will often send our clients home with TNS Recovery Complex following a skin treatment to help minimize downtime and speed recovery.”

“I have been in the beauty business over 30 years and seen a lot of changes. I love clean beauty brands that are beautifully packaged, effective and environmentally conscious. I started indigenaskincare.com 6 years ago and we believe in using indigenous botanicals from our land and surrounding sea. Our latest formulas we just launched are Cloudberry Complexion Oil, Aurora Borealé Facial Serum and Townie Beard Balm.

I also love Tarte Cosmetics, their lipsticks are the absolute best. I buy local, Canadian, and USA based brands first. Its important to support the companies at home and within area, country and Continent.”

Michelle~ #Science educator, #scicomm enthusiast, chem PhD, pole dancer and #beautyscience #bblogger, exploring the science behind beauty, skincare and nail products

“My favourite brands are:

Paula’s Choice: Paula Begoun’s products are reasonably priced and their effectiveness is backed by scientific studies. In particular, the hydroxy acid products are fantastic for smoothing out skin and preventing future breakouts.

Bioderma and La Roche-Posay are two French skincare brands that formulate very high protection sunscreens. They’re effective against both UVA and UVB, which is very important if you’re looking to avoid skin cancer and photoaging (sun-induced wrinkles and age spots).

Trilogy make fantastic rosehip oil-based products. Rosehip oil is my favorite face oil because it helps brighten skin and clear up breakouts, and it works great even on my oily skin.

My favourite products in their range are their rosehip oil and Everything Balm, which is useful for everything. I particularly like how effective it is on the dry skin on my elbows.

Skinfood is my favorite Korean skincare brand. They make a fantastic peeling gel for physical exfoliation.”

Pascale Labelle – website // twitter

Pascale Labelle~ Founder of @BlueLabelleUK skincare. Plant oil enthusiast, I enjoy looking at wild birds & eating big curries. Pleased to meet you!

“I love any brand that makes its ethos to be sustainable, green, use all natural ingredients and organic where possible. The first green skincare brand I remember using was Green People in the UK, I still use their no scent shower gel every day. I also love Dr Bronner’s for their ethos and brilliant products.

Through my connections online i’ve been able to learn about so many amazing skincare brands out there including Neals Yard, Josh Rosebrook, One Love Organics, Meow Meow Tweet, Vapour, Jason, Bodhi & Birch, Natural Wisdom, Mahalo, and Botanicals, through websites like Cult Beauty, LoveLula, Naturisimo and through beauty bloggers such as Sarita Coren, The Green Product Junkie and Liz the Green Spirit.

The industry is filled with amazing brands right now, who all love to take wonderful plant ingredients and blend them into magical skincare products. I also love how many of them are headed by women entrepreneurs!”

“While as the Green Living Guy I really don’t use cosmetics or things like that. However, I do use a few brands that help keep my skin clean with heavy duty environmental pollution occurring.

  1. A 100 percent natural bar of soap. Not one you get in a box. Go get the Big natural bars. They work amazing. Keep skin clean and tight with no chemicals inside. Yes soap bars have chemicals!

2. Kos Organic face scrub

3. Aveeno body wash or May Lindstrom products

4. Drink organic green smoothies (nothing better for the skin)

5. When in doubt frankly I go to my buddy of buddies Tara Mackey who is the owner of Organiclifeblog. We’ve been friends since 2010 and I trust her word! She’s got one book down and about to make another.

Shannon Sorensen – website // twitter

Shannon Sorensen~ Sensitive Skincare Advocate & Founder of Fairface Washcloths™ for sensitive skin & Rosacea

“Being a sensitive skin girl, I love all things gentle and soothing on my skin. I reach for products that are moisturizing and free from harsh fragrances and ingredients.

For my face, I love Vanicream face wash for sensitive skin and their lite moisturizer. This brand was recommended by my dermatologist as a very gentle, non-irritating brand and I really like it. I apply the cleanser using our own brand, Fairface washcloths, because they clean gently and are soft and non-irritating against my skin.

My favorite body wash is Dr. Bronner’s Lavender Pure Castile Soap. I prefer the liquid version, and although it is a bit runny, it is my go-to body wash. It’s gentle to my skin and the light lavender scent is natural, relaxing and not too overpowering or irritating to my skin.

For my lips, I love Burt’s Bees peppermint lip balm for keeping my lips soft and moisturized. I don’t go a night without it!”

Susie Amy – website // twitter

“Skincare is my number one priority before anything else beauty. ARK Skincare is a wonderful range and their Radiance Serum has made an enormous difference to the appearance of my skin – it contains encapsulated Vitamin C which works against dark sun spots. I use it twice a day underneath my moisturiser.

I also think that cleansing the skin properly is vital so I use ARK Skincare’s Pro Remove Pre Cleanse before their Age Defend Cleanser. If your skin isn’t thoroughly cleansed there is no point in using expensive serums or moisturisers because they won’t sink in.

I swear by the Aroma Works ‘Aromabombs’ for relaxation and leaving my skin coated in essential oils. I also think that SkinCeuticals have some fantastic products such as their Age and Blemish Defense Treatment – it’s great for skin that struggles with blemishes that cannot be brought under control – it made a huge difference to my skin when I needed it.

The key to good skin is sunscreen – I use Ark Skincare’s SPF30 Skin Protector Primer – plenty of water, and a consistent regime.”

Alana Mitchell – website // twitter

article image~ Loving Mother, Devoted Wife, Medical Esthetician, Founder and Owner of SkinCare by Alana, Founder and Owner of Alana Mitchell Skincare, Founder and Owner of Spa Alana, Beauty Blogger, and more!

“Having worked in the beauty industry my whole life, I have been able to see, hear, and feel what has been missing. I have always loved beauty and skincare, and owning a company that retails over 300 lines (all of which are tried and tested by yours truly) I was inspired to create my very own line… and YES, it is definitely my number one favorite!

My Alana Mitchell Skincare brand focuses primarily on three things: (1) achieving beautiful skin through education, (2) delivering results focused products, and (3) offering products that deliver an amazing blend of effective, scientific ingredients, and the best natural/organic ingredients wherever possible.

We launched in 2016 and it has been truly exciting – with amazing feedback and huge growth – which I project to continue into 2017 and beyond!

Other brands that I absolutely love include: Epicuren Discovery (there Eye Cream has been a holy grail of mine since my early 20’s), Image Skincare (even though I primarily use my Foaming Pumpkin Cleanser, I have been in LOVE with their Vital C Hydrating Facial Cleanser for many, many years), DermaQuest (their tinted sunscreen is AMAZING), and so many more!

I am truly a skincare aficionado, it is really difficult to narrow it down to just one!”

    Hi, Alana!
I am really struggling to find the right skincare for my skin type. I am really confused about what my skin type is. I thought my skin was oily, as my forward is shiny and I struggle with blemishes on my chin but recently when I had a facial I was told my skin is dry but I do not have any dry patches.
Let me tell you about my skin:
Forehead: After cleansing it is not shiny just fine lines. But as the day progresses it gets shiny and feels greasy.
Nose: Again after cleansing it feels and looks ‘normal’ but as the day progresses it gets shiny and feels greasy
Cheeks: Feel normal but slightly red and can get more red very quickly with heat, certain products etc.
Chin: After cleansing it it fine but again as the day progresses it gets shiny and feels greasy.
Eyes: Fine lines, slight dark circles

I can suffer from blemishes a lot on my chin and jawline. I never used to but it has just been over the past few years. If I use harsh acne products, my skin becomes very dry in those areas. I only seem to have the odd one now but I used to have at least 5-8 constantly. I would like to go back to not having any or only the occasional one, not having at least one all the time.

I drink a lot of water, so don’t feel my skin in dehydrated.

So to sum up my skin is oily, red, acne scarring, fine lines and blemish prone(occasional), occasional dryness with certain products.

I just want my skin to stop being shiny. I have tried matt moisterisers and it is still the same.

I apolgise for rambling on but hope you can offer some advise.

  • Alana

Hi, Danielle! I recommend Alana Mitchell skincare products that will target your concerns! One of my personal faves is the Alana Mitchell Daily Vitamin C Moisturizer because it delivers hydrating, soothing, and rejuvenating results. It brightens skin and encourages collagen production with 20% vitamin C for anti-aging benefits. I also love the Alana Mitchell Hyaluronic Moisture Boost Serum for hydration as well.
I think starting out with the All Skin Types Set would be a great idea for your skin – all products included are safe for skin that gets irritated easily. https://www.skincarebyalana.com/alana-mitchell-skincare-holiday-collection.html
    I hope this helps!

  • Shafikah

Hye.. did you have any suggestion of products for dry and acne prone skin.. thank you…

  • Ashikin

Hi Alana. I have oily skin and after do some skincare I think I manage to balance it out. So I just tried using oil on my face just to help reducing my acne and some additional stuff. It has rosehip oil and tea tree oil. But I feel like my skin become oily again. Usually after I put toner I put the oil. I put two drops on my palm and rubbed it then dap on to my face. Then I wait for an hour for it to absorb then I continue with mosturiser. Am I doing it correctly?

    • Alana

      Hi Ashikin,
While rosehip oil is awesome for a more oily skin type, it’s also very high in vitamin A. That being said, the excess oil production could be caused by using rosehip oil. You could try using jojoba oil with the tea tree oil or you could use https://www.skincarebyalana.com/alana-mitchell-night-r1-facial-oil.html (which has coconut oil for hydration and vitamin A for anti-aging). Also, make sure you ease your skin into any change. If you went from using 0 oils to using an oil every day, your skin probably doesn’t know what’s going on! When changing up your skincare, make sure you ease your skin into it slowly, 1-2 times per week, so your skin can acclimate and hopefully not freak out.

  • Nicole

    Hi Alana,
I’ve currently just been using water , rose water, & Grapeseed oil..
Its call my face down a lot..
I just need a good moisturizer with a spf 4 my oily dehydrated skin..
    Please help..
    Thankx Alana

I have pcos and I have really bad hormonal acne! Its all over my cheeks and my lower chin area. I get atleast two cystic pimples a day and when my face is really itchy in spots I know I am getting a new one . I am 26 years old and I am frustrated and I feel like my whole world is coming down on me. I know acne isnt that big of a deal for some people and some people dont understand, but I have been taking care of my skin, and eating healthy for over 1 year. My face has always been a first priority for me. I am heart broken right now… I am on spirolactone 100 mg and Doxocycline 100mg for the past almost 2 months and I don’t really see any results. Some days I might but others I dont.

I use aloe vera face wipes to wash my face with cetaphil sometimes, and I have a Bianca gel I put on the pimples at night, and acozone in the morning but have recently stopped because I haven’t seen any improvements.

I would love some information from some one on what to try for my skin. It is oily very acne prone right now and very sensitive.

I have been thinking about using Witch Hazel but I don’t know if there is an initial break out, I really can’t mentally go through that right now.

I have high testostorne and I have just got my period for the second time in a year which means the pills are working but I need something to put on my skin to make the break outs go away and stay away.
