Flawless Facial Skin And How To Get It

Skin imperfections and conditions don’t have to be barriers on your road to facial perfection!

blog_20170605_1

Our complexions are one of the biggest complexities in life. Most of us aren’t born with lifelong, flawless, blemish-free skin that looks airbrushed and perfect (shocking, I know). From puberty onward, we learn that having good skin takes a good amount of work on our end. Healthy complexions don’t always come naturally, and developing an effective skincare routine and learning what products work for you becomes essential.

Acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S., affecting more than 50 million of us annually. The American Academy of Dermatology describes it as a chronic inflammatory skin condition, usually presenting itself in the form of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, or even cysts. Most of us had our first experience in the onset of puberty, but for a lot of people the acne battle is waged well into adulthood. The costs associated with acne treatment exceed $3 billion? Crazy!

The AAD describes other common skin imperfections that include eczema, psoriasis, and age spots. The most common form of eczema, atopic dermatitis, affects nearly 20 percent of children age 10 and younger in the U.S. alone. Psoriasis, usually prevalent in adults only, affects nearly 8 million Americans. As for age spots and wrinkles, those numbers vary. Genetics, skin type, and your history of UV exposure are all factors that directly contribute to premature aging.

If you find yourself relating to any of the above statistics, have no fear. With a little extra TLC and the proper skincare routine, you can be well on your way to flawless facial skin. From facial cleansers and moisturizers, to concealer and other cosmetics, achieving a beautiful complexion can be a reality for you, no matter what issues you feel you have.

It All Starts With Proper Skincare

I can’t stress it enough; developing a solid skincare routine for mornings and evenings is vital to the overall health and appearance of your complexion. A thorough routine in the morning and at night can nourish your skin and help it repair itself.

Step 1: Cleanse with an effective cleanser that’s appropriate for your skin type.

Step 2: Rejuvenate and hydrate with a moisturizer or serum.

Step 3: Lightly dab an eye cream of serum under and around your eyes (nighttime only).

When it comes to exfoliation, usually less is more. Every two days or so should suffice, unless your skin is thick and errs on the rougher side. If your skin is extra sensitive, a gentle exfoliation only once or twice per week is perfect.

Gentle cleansers that work to remove oil or makeup offers your skin a fresh start every day. Moisturizers and serums work to lock in the hydration your skin needs to nourish and revitalize your skin without weighing it down. Eye creams are designed specifically for the delicate skin surrounding your eyes, giving them a youthful and brighter appearance.

Developing and sticking to a regular skincare routine offers your skin the best chance at looking and feeling flawless. Dermatologists with the AAD agree: customizing your skincare routine based on your individual skincare needs is key. Remember to choose products that work with your skin type, not against. For example, excessively oily skin can benefit from products without oil. Acne-prone skin reacts best to gentle, fragrance-free or calming ingredients. Skin of color is prone to discoloration over time via sun exposure, and therefore can benefit from applying a daily sunscreen.

Feel Flawless With The Right Cosmetics

I could go on all day about the beauty of makeup. We all use it for various reasons; to feel good about ourselves, to cover up blemishes or imperfections that make us feel insecure, to play around with in good fun, to create art on the canvas of our faces…the list goes on.

From concealer and foundation to pressed or mineral powders, contouring, and blush - our options are seemingly endless if we want to achieve a smooth, flawless facial finish. That doesn’t mean it’s always easy - according to a study conducted by the NPD group, nearly 62% of women worldwide are concerned they aren’t applying foundation correctly.

  • Starting with a properly cleaned canvas is the best way to go, so after following the steps of your skincare routine you can apply a good facial primer so your makeup goes on evenly and sets well for the day.
  • Analyze your skin’s shade, undertones, and overall skin type when choosing the right foundation. You want it to look natural while maintaining effectiveness.
  • Choose between your fingers, a makeup sponge, or a foundation brush for application. Fingers are easy and offer more control over application, sponges offer a fuller amount of coverage, and brushes are perfect for even distribution and that movie star finish!
  • No matter how you choose to apply your foundation, don’t forget to blend!
  • Concealer should be added after foundation; you will use less of it and will have a better chance of achieving a look worthy of a photo-finish.

The Trifecta: Diet, Exercise, And Sunscreen

Sure, the right products and cosmetics are the first things that come to mind when I want to improve my complexion or have my face look as flawless as it can. But don’t discount the importance of a balanced diet, exercise, and... drumroll for effect.... SUNSCREEN!

When it comes to diet, the most important factor to follow is hydration. Water is key in so many elements of a healthy, functioning body. But most people don’t realize how beneficial the right amount of H2O can be for your skin, too. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it deserves the nourishment that comes with proper hydration. I don’t know about you, but I’ll drink to that!

The University of Wisconsin Health Department states that if your skin is not getting the sufficient amount of water, the lack of hydration will present itself by turning your skin dry, tight and flaky. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling.

Exercise increases blood flow, which helps nourish your skin cells by keeping them healthy. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to those cells, which includes your skin. According to the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, by increasing your blood flow, regular exercise can also help flush out cellular debris from your system.

This brings us to sunscreen. Not only does sunscreen help prevent skin cancer by protecting you from harmful UV rays, but it can also prevent signs of aging. The AAD estimates that one in five Americans will develop a form of skin cancer in their lifetime. Scary, isn’t it?

Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher can also prevent skin damage and early aging through the protection that it offers. For truly flawless skin, sunscreen is essential.
