Time to wash a long day off? Face washing is arguably the most important part of your skin care routine. Cleaning off icky, old surface skin cells, dirt and dust, grime, make-up and bacteria helps keep pores free of clogs. Grossed out, yet? Here’s how to do it the right way!
1- Unless you have exposed your skin to excessive dust, grime or pollution, twice-a-day cleansing is more than adequate for most people. Tie your hair back from your face and pin back bangs. Make sure you can see and access your entire face, including your ears and neck. Wash your hands with an antibacterial soap to clean them before you touch your face. Wet your face with warm water. Hot water dries and damages skin over time, and cold water won’t dissolve and take away embedded dirt and grime as well. If required consider natural organic day spa treatments.
2- Put a small amount of face cleanser on your hands, about the size of a nickel and rub between your wet hands. Use a product that is gentle enough for your skin and suits your age and skin type. Image Skincare has facial cleansers for every skin type! The full skin care systems make it easy to care for your face from day to night, including an organic line. Overly strong soaps will just dry the skin out and stimulate the oil glands to produce more oil. Your goal is to remove excess oil and retain moisture at the same time. Take 30 seconds or so, concentrating on the “T-zone“; forehead, nose, nostril area, then around the mouth and chin, then cheeks. Cleanse the neck using upward strokes. You have oil glands behind your ears, so don’t neglect that area. It’s messy, but do it anyway.

3- If you use sponges or wash cloths, make sure they are clean and soft. They are not necessary for effective cleansing: your fingertips can do just as good a job.
4- Rinse your face well to remove all residue of soap or cleanser. Residues left behind of even the best cleansers can actually clog your pores and lead to acne. Cheap facial cleansers can leave an invisible residue behind which can clog your pores. Rinse your face three times, then rinse again.
5- Pat your face dry with a clean and soft, absorbent towel; linen is a good choice. Make sure you pat it dry gently. Always treat your face delicately.
6- After cleansing, some product regimens include a toner. It should make your face feel smooth and refreshed. Astringents and toners with glycolic acid or alpha hydroxy acid work best for toning the face. These acids can actually reduce the size of your pores and help avoid ingrown hairs. They are aggressive and will provide quick results. Nutraluxe MD Botanical Toner ($24) removes shine from the T-Zone without stripping the skin of key nutrients and ingredients.
7- Finish off with a good moisturizer to replenish the natural oils that have been lost. Moisturizing after cleansing is an absolute necessity. Again, the product with the least amount of harsh chemical additives is best. Always use a light moisturizer on your face after cleansing. If it is morning, apply a mositurizer with SPF! Dermaquest Solar Moisturizer ($34) firms and tightens skin while shielding it with an SPF of 30!
A good round of facial cleansing is the perfect way to both start and end the day! Don’t give in to the temptation to skip this step! Don’t break out your makeup or hit the pillow without a fresh and clean face! EVER!
